2013 Latino Diversity Training
BASE embraces diversity and cultural differences and in 2013 hosted a diversity workshop, Walk One Hour in My Shoes. Part of our Action Plan is to host and attend various workshops and trainings to help the coalition be inclusive of all community members. Walk One Hour was facilitated by the UW Extension and organized by BASE. Community members from Evansville, as well as surrounding communities, attended the workshop that was held at Creekside Place.
Cultural competency is more than speaking a different language and enjoying different foods. It is a process of learning about different cultures, demonstrating respect for the ways in which others live and developing an openness to learn. The purpose was to help attendees learn about Hispanic and Latino values and culture and assess how one’s own culture influences beliefs, values and attitudes. Participants are encouraged to apply their new-found knowledge to work more effectively with the Hispanic and Latino populations.
